I have been photographing weddings for a long time now, and it is always an honour and a privilege to be invited to document a couple’s special day. Couples put a lot of trust in us wedding suppliers, and everyone involved has to pull their weight faultlessly, with a top-of their-game performance every time. It’s a huge jigsaw of skilled people that has to fit together all at the same moment. For weddings at The Olde Bell, Hurley, for example, there were florists, caterers, lighting and sound specialists, order of service printers, dress makers, jewellers, waiters and waitresses, oh and photographers. We professionals all have to perform in unison, to perfection, at the same time. No mean feat really.
Rising to the challenge of documenting big events like weddings at The Olde Bell, Hurley, is a thrill I can’t get enough of. It keeps me sharp, on my toes, and focussed not only on the day itself but all the time – I train to do this! It takes a lot of effort, both physically and mentally to photograph a wedding, not just adequately, but really well, and every time. It’s exciting to be part of the most significant day in couples’ lives, and hugely satisfying to produce a body of work that accurately records the special moments of the day, with honesty, integrity and dare I say it, passion. I often get to the end of the wedding realising that I’ve been so focussed on my work that I haven’t thought of anything else all day.
And with friendly and generous couples like Mia and Saul, we are embraced and involved as if we were family members. It’s an intimate and intense relationship just for the day, and it allows us in to witness and record personal and emotional moments, all of which add up to a complete story.
Here’s their story.
