Laura and Gavin’s Wedding | One Great George Street, London

I was thrilled to be commissioned to photograph Laura and Gavin’s wedding, for many reasons. The first is that wedding photography at One Great George Street is always a pleasure, as I am well known there and a big fan of the venue. The second, and probably more important, is that Laura and Gavin are a fabulous couple, and we got on brilliantly right from our first meeting.

And thirdly, I had no idea until two days before the wedding, that Katherine Jenkins, that’s THE Katherine Jenkins, was Laura’s sister. AND – she would be singing at the wedding. Me, excited? Oh yes.

Bridal prep was at the splendid Marriott County Hall Hotel, which is a lot smarter than it sounds. Just on Westminster Bridge, it is a big and luxurious hotel, and perfect for Laura’s team of hair and make-up artists. We all piled into wedding cabs for the short trip to One Great George Street, where we were greeted rather unceremoniously by the paparazzi, who had, despite the utmost secrecy, tracked down Katherine. For Katherine, it’s another day at the office. For me, it was a bit scary – they don’t hold back.

We got safely into One Great George Street, calmness regained, the ceremony began, and Laura was given away by her lovely mum. After Laura and Gavin had spoken their promises to each other, Katherine sung, and it was soooo moving, in that place, with those people, for her sister at that ceremony. Beautiful.

Here are some of my favourite images from the day. Your thoughts are always welcome, please feel free to leave a comment or two below.

Here are a few kind words from Laura after she saw their images: “Wow – thanks Steve – they are amazing!  We absolutely love them – thanks so much.  We got back from honeymoon this morning so it’s been nice looking over these when we got home.”

And after seeing their Photofilm:  “We’ve just watched it together and I was in tears again… it’s lovely – thank you so much.”

Weddings at St James’ Palace, London | Elizabeth and David

St James’ Palace is the most gorgeous and intimate venue for a wedding. You have to be connected, and as Elizabeth has a family association with the royal household, she was allowed to marry David in the chapel. I had to attend a recce (I would anyway, but this time I had to) and there were big restrictions on what we could do and where we could go. I was surprised to find that, as long as we didn’t move around, and had super quiet cameras, we were able to photograph the key parts of the service. The key organiser was The Servant of the Vestry, David Baldwin, and as long as he wasn’t frowning at me, we were ok! Guests were not allowed to use cameras at all.

The ceremony was conducted by The Reverend Prebendary William Scott, the Sub Dean of Her Majesty’s Chapels Royal, and he was the most charming and smiley gentleman. It all took place in The Chapel Royal at St James’ Palace, which is panelled with pale wood, detailed with gold carving, with tapestries along the walls. The choir and guests sit facing across the aisle, and the stalls have small lights to illuminate the hymn books. Above the altar is a beautiful stained glass window with golden light flooding through.

The reason I’m telling you all this, is that I can’t show you! All the photography we did in St James’s Palace is copyright of The Queen, and I am not allowed to show any here. : (

So, onwards to the wonderful One Great George Street, one of my favourite wedding venues in London, where I am a preferred supplier. It’s perfectly positioned for Parliament Square, and St James’ Park, and as you’ll see below we made good use of them. A fabulous day was had by everyone.

To finish, a few well chosen words from David:

Hi Steve,

The photos are wonderful, thank you.

kind regards

David
