Sustainability is on the global agenda as I write. We need to replace the materials that we use to make things so as not to deplete the resources we have, otherwise we will have nothing left to meet our needs. We have to recycle as much as we can so that we don’t use up everything. To quote Wikipedia – “sustainability is the capacity to endure; it is how biological systems remain diverse and productive indefinitely.” English Heritage, who run Wrest Park House and Gardens, say “Developing policies to manage the impact of climate change allows us to conserve historic gardens for the future. As well as monitoring the effects of climate change in our gardens and landscapes, we limit the use of peat and manage green waste sustainably wherever possible”

Sustainability not only applies to the stuff we buy and use. We need our relationships to be sustainable too.

We all embark on serious relationships hoping that our investment in each other is rewarded. It has to be balanced to be sustainable – we must put in what we hope to get out. A good relationship, like Jess and Jamie’s, will always need to be nourished with respect, care and trust to make it long term. I’ve been married for nearly 35 years, and we have balanced and occasionally re-balanced our relationship to keep it lively, fun and meaningful. Jess and Jamie’s summer wedding at Wrest Park was full of life, love and laughter, just as they are, and I know they already have the materials they need for a sustainable relationship.
